Auburn Bay School is partnering with the Calgary Food Bank once again this October to help fight hunger in our community. We Scare Hunger is made possible with the support of  Help Hunger Disappear ®,  Campbell Canada's national hunger awareness and food drive program. Since 2008,  Help Hunger Disappear ®  reminds us that we can all play a part in helping the more than 900,000 Canadians who rely on their local food banks every month. The Auburn Bay School We Scare Hunger Campaign officially begins on Tuesday, October 1st and will end October 31st. We invite you to be a part of the change our students are working hard to create. Students have been asked to bring in food bank items throughout the next month Last year we brought in 1720 pounds of food. This year, our school goal is to collect  1800 pounds  of food! To give you an idea of how much food that is, the average family of 4 people receive an estimated 125 pounds worth of food, filling approximately 2 grocery carts pe

Toonies for Terry

Auburn Bay School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run on Wednesday, September 25th. As we lead up to our run, classes will be working towards increasing their stamina in Phys. Ed while fundraising money for cancer research. Please bring in Toonies for Terry to your classroom teacher as we spread cancer awareness. On the day of the run, it is important that students wear appropriate outside shoes for walking/running along with dressing appropriately for the weather that day. Parents are welcome to join us for this event out on the soccer field at 1:45 PM on Wednesday, September 25th. The Terry Fox Run will last approximately 15 minutes and students will line up with their homeroom teacher to go back inside for the remainder of the afternoon when we have finished. We kindly ask parents to wait outside while this is happening and to pick up your child from their normal dismissal spot.
Today during Literacy students were asked to write about a time they felt anticipation .  The students came up with a wide range of ideas, from upcoming family trips, to birthday parties, to waiting for a new family member to arrive.  Students picked a time they felt anticipation and wrote a short paragraph explaining what they were feeling anticipation about and describing how they felt and what they did to prepare for the event.  Some students will have their literacy books in their Home Communication folders because they did not finish the writing in class and will need to complete the activity at home.  Please allow your child to spend 10-15 minutes working on their writing to complete 3-4 good sentences about their memory of anticipation.  If the book is not in their folder, it means they completed the writing in class.

Field Trip Volunteers

Thank you so much for the overwhelming response to join us on our Field Trip to Frank Slide. We now have enough volunteers. We will have a few more field trips later this year if you did not get a chance to volunteer for this one. Again, Thanks so much!

Tuesday September 10th

Our class will be going on a fieldtrip to the Frank Slide on October 22.  We are looking for volunteers for the entire day.  if you are interested and have your police clearance, please email Mr. Neiger and Miss Kowal. If you are interested in joining Senior Choir, please see the link below and print and return the form to Mrs Bourgeois. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1fLlMWBQH5f7QjaU6WYowQD1RnhL7YgHG Today in class we learned about India. We discussed the differences between schools in India and schools in Canada.  We learned that India has a LOT more people than Canada but is a much smaller country.  In 2018, Canada had about 37,000,000 people and India had 1,339,000,000 people! In math we learned a new game to practice our mental math for addition and reviewed place value up to 1000. We also learned a Word Scramble game where we tried to make as many different words as possible from the secret word:  raindrops. In Literacy, we took a spelling assessment that will be

Thursday Sept 5

This morning we had our first Music class with Mrs Bourgeois. Ask your child what they did! We took a class picture in front of the school and displaying our class word of 'resilient'. Ask your child what the word means and check out our picture tonight during the open house. It is on display on the bulletin board outside the office. We went to Phys Ed and played a game. During Art today we drew self portraits that are on display in our classroom. In math we worked on some 'Solve Me' puzzles together and talked about how we speak about math and how we can help each other while learning new math skills. Today we had our first student in the 'hot seat', Charlie took a turn today and we learned some new information about him. We learned a few games that help us work on strategizing and problem solving. Home Communication: a large package is coming home today. It includes several important forms that we need filled out and returned ASAP. Reminder: -

Wednesday Sept. 4

This morning we read 'Rosie Revere, Engineer' and discussed having a growth mindset and never giving up. We then did a STEM challenge using popsicle sticks and rubber bands to try to make a catapult. Ask your child how their's went! We had our first Phys Ed class with Mrs Miller and went over expectations and rules. Continuing our work from yesterday, in Math we wrote our own word problems about ourselves for Miss Kowal and Mr Neiger to solve and learn more about the students. An example of a problem is "to figure out how many pets I have subtract 4 from 6". We learned how to login to the computers using our new passwords and how to get into GoogleDrive. We then create a 'pop art' word that describes ourselves. Students can show you what they came up with my logging into GoogleDrive at home. The username and password information is on the inside of their Home Communication folder. Mr Neiger had his turn in the 'Hot Seat' today. Ask your chi

First Day of School!

Image
We had a great first day of school! This morning we met our 2 teachers: Mr. Neiger and Miss Kowal. They are both Learning Leaders in our school so during the mornings Mr. Neiger is in the classroom with us while Miss Kowal is helping teachers around the school or working in other classrooms. In the afternoon Miss Kowal is in our classroom and Mr. Neiger is helping other classes and teachers. For this week, both Mr. Neiger and Miss Kowal will be in the classroom all day. We worked with a small group to solve some math problems about our teachers so we could learn more about them. We made buttons with our names on them so we can wear them while our teachers learn our names and then later in the year we can wear them on field trips. After a snack and fresh air break, we did some Robotics with a partner to program Dash to move around a chair without bumping into it. After lunch, we read 'You're Finally Here' by Melanie Watt. Some of us recognized her as the author
