First Day of School!

We had a great first day of school! This morning we met our 2 teachers: Mr. Neiger and Miss Kowal. They are both Learning Leaders in our school so during the mornings Mr. Neiger is in the classroom with us while Miss Kowal is helping teachers around the school or working in other classrooms. In the afternoon Miss Kowal is in our classroom and Mr. Neiger is helping other classes and teachers. For this week, both Mr. Neiger and Miss Kowal will be in the classroom all day. We worked with a small group to solve some math problems about our teachers so we could learn more about them. We made buttons with our names on them so we can wear them while our teachers learn our names and then later in the year we can wear them on field trips. After a snack and fresh air break, we did some Robotics with a partner to program Dash to move around a chair without bumping into it.

After lunch, we read 'You're Finally Here' by Melanie Watt. Some of us recognized her as the author of 'Scaredy Squirrel' and the 'Chester' series.

We played a game to get to know each other better. We sorted ourselves by our similarities like number of siblings, eye colour and birth month. Then we played a 'would you rather' game where we had to pick 1 of 2 choices.

We did a rough estimate and figured out that we have over 1000 books in our classroom. We did a quick 'book look' to familiarize ourselves with some of the books that we will have the chance to read this year.

We had an afternoon fresh air break (since we didn't have Gym today, but we do tomorrow!)

We gathered in the Gym for a 'Welcome Back' assembly.

We played 'hot seat', where we asked questions to the person sitting in the hot seat. We are learning to ask complex questions that cannot be answered with a 'yes' or 'no' response. Today Miss Kowal was in the hot seat, tomorrow Mr. Neiger is up! Throughout the year, each student will get a turn in the hot seat so we can get to know everyone really well.

Today students are bringing home their 'Home Communication' folder. This will come home every night and needs to be returned to school each day.

Thursday we are having an Open House from 5-6 where students can show off their classroom and you can meet the teachers!

We can't wait for day 2 of Grade 3.
