Week of Nov 25

We have had a few very busy weeks! Thanks to all the parent volunteers who came to the CPO and Studio Bell with us! To see pictures and videos from yesterday's Studio Bell trip, please check out twitter! An email went home today to families who RSVP'ed for the Special Class Event. Please check your emails! We have been extra busy this week putting the finishing touches on our HP trailers. In Math we are working on SolveMe puzzles (link included in LINKS section). These involve a lot of problem solving and mental math. These are AMAZING problems to try at home! Students are learning a lot of strategies to become more efficient when solving these. As a challenge, we are trying to figure out puzzle 139 from the MASTERS section. We are learning about Hearing and Sound in Science. In Social Studies we are working to wrap up our study of India in the next few weeks. Lots of additional practices for the Christmas concert are underway. Students are excited to perform for yo...

We learned a new math game today called 'Farkle' that helps us practice our subtraction with regrouping. The instructions are posted in the 'LINKS' section so you can play at home! We also did a collaborative problem solving task. Ask your child to explain the task using these pictures as a reference. In social studies we continued to research about India using CultureGrams. Students are investigating the Climate & Land, Religion, Languages and about the Taj Mahal. Ask your child what they know about these areas. We have been practicing reading information then recording it in our own words. In language arts we are learning how to storyboard important parts of a book. We are going to be making Harry Potter trailers to summarize the novel we read in class. Students are asked to bring in any props or costumes that they feel would help with their trailers. These items will remain at class for the next few weeks. In science we are going to start our unit o...

Week of Nov. 4th

In science we have been conducting tests to determine different types of rocks. In social studies we have been discussing Remembrance Day and will be doing research about India using a new website called Culturegrams. In math we are learning about different units of time and how to solve problems using a calendar. We taught our grade 1 buddies how to use a number line to add numbers together while playing a game called Totality. We are learning about some different forms of poetry and are writing a haiku about Remembrance Day. We created Remembrance Day art around peace to display on Friday for our assembly. Class photos were sent home today. Reminders: - CPO Field Trip is on Nov. 13th - Email Ms Kowal if you are coming to our special class event on Nov 28th

Weekly Update

In Math we are working on subtraction as well as building our number sense and problem solving skills by solving and creating our own 'Who Am I?' tasks. In Science we are wrapping up our rocks and minerals unit and incorporating what we learned at Frank Slide. In Language Arts we are writing a descriptive paragraph imagining that we were in Frank when the slide occurred in 1903. In Social Studies we have been learning about Diwali and used a venn diagram to compare Diwali to a celebration that we are familiar with like Christmas or Eid. We are collecting field trip forms for the CPO. Please return ASAP and please ensure that you pay either online or at the school. Halloween costume can be brought to school on Thursday and we will put them on after lunch. Reminder: No classes on Friday

Social Studies

We have been learning about Diwali in Social Studies. Students used getepic.com to read non-fiction books about Diwali to answer questions. Students are learning how to write ideas and information from books in their own words. We learned about the importance of Diwali in India and about customs, traditions and history. We learned that one symbol for Diwali is a rangoli. Students learned that rangoli are often in a circular shape and are symmetrical. We create our own rangoli art that you can see in the pictures. Another custom we learned about Diwali is that sweet treats are often offered. We tried a puff pastry type treat called Khari today. Many students said it reminded them of saltine crackers. We even tried an Indian style dance today! Ask your child to tell you more about what they learned about Diwali.

Volunteers Needed

We have a busy few weeks ahead with 2 more field trips before December. On Wednesday November 13th we will be going to The Jack Singer Concert Hall to watch a performance of 'Haydn and the Symphony' as apart of our Music program. Forms for this trip are coming home today. We require 3 volunteers for this field trip. Then on Tuesday November 26th we will be going to Studio Bell to do a Science program around 'hearing and sound'. We require 5 volunteers for this field trip. We will be giving priority to parents who have not yet been on a field trip with us this year. Please email Miss Kowal at djkowal@cbe.ab.ca if you are interested in either field trip.  Please remember you must already have your CBE volunteer clearance completed and up to date.
